  • Alternative Character Interpretation:
    • Izumi. Is she honestly trying to become a better mother, or is it too little, too late?
    • While Yuuma is generally considered to be a terrible father, some theorize that his behavior is potentially a Batman Gambit to get Souji to develop independence.
  • Base-Breaking Character: Izumi. As detailed under Alternative Character Interpretation, not all readers buy her change of heart and attempts to be a better mother to her son. Those that do, however, consider her to be a well-developed and very human character, and appreciate that while she's not a good parent, she's trying to be one.
  • Fridge Logic: While Souji's scars are an arguably realistic consequence of his battle with Shadows, it doesn't explain why no one saw the scars on his arms when he wore short-sleeved shirts with his uniform and casual outfits from June to early October.
  • Love to Hate: While virtually no one likes Yuuma, a fair number of viewers consider him a well-written and believable character who's unlikable without being over-the-top.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Yuuma apparently pulling strings to deprive Souji of his scholarship and job so that he'll have no choice but to work for Yuuma. It's not especially heinous by the standards of the trope, but it did result in some readers giving up their hopes for a father-son reconciliation, just like how most characters who cross this line are considered to be beyond redemption.
  • Schedule Slip: The fic went without any updates from when Chapter 29 was posted on December 8, 2015note  to when Chapter 30 was posted on February 14, 2017.
  • Series Hiatus: After releasing Chapter 31 on July 19, 2017, the author announced that he was going on a planned hiatus to focus on his other fic, Change of Engagement. The hiatus ended when Chapter 32 was released on November 3, 2021.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: To some, Izumi's change of heart isn't as convincing as the fic might suggest, since while some characters are skeptical, she's gradually winning them over. As mentioned in Alternative Character Interpretation, though, some find the change to be forced and perhaps not enough to make up for neglecting Soji for all of his childhood. Izumi is being set up as the Big Good against Yuuma, which seems a bit odd considering her own actions.
