• Alternate Character Interpretation: Exactly why did Ruth destroy the Master's painting of Clara? Ruth admits in the epilogue that she doesn't know herself why she did it, so it could have have been for any reason, really.
• Hollywood Homely: Iris, in the movie.
• Jerkass Woobie: Par the course for Gregory Maguire. Margarethe definitely, and Clara less-so.
• Wangst: Clara loves to go on about how sad her life is, in stark contrast to Iris and Ruth, who are disadvantaged but have better things to do than whine all day.
