- Contested Sequel: Civilization IV: Colonization has been criticized for not expanding the concepts of the original game enough. There are still only four playable colonial powers (England, France, Netherlands, and Spain), and the victory condition is still declaring and winning a war of independence.
- Values Dissonance:
- By the 2010s, the general public became more aware of the less savory acts by the colonial powers and their explorers in the Americas, making a sequel in the original form unlikely. Even the 2008 remake was criticized for its Politically Correct History that glared over the more controversial issues of the era such as slave trade.
- Even if the game were to overcome such hurdles, the heavily Americentric framing would not sit well with those aware of the differing experiences of colonialism in the Americas, from Portuguese settlement of Brazil to Russia's involvement in Alaska.
