- Darker and Edgier: Right from the get-go, you can tell this is going to be a much different game from "The Silver Lining"! The characters swear, whereas in TSL, there was one curse from the Narrator. The game is a lot more gory and bloody. Characters die in Cognition, and the story gets darker and darker with each episode's twist (then again, TSL does this too)
- Draco in Leather Pants: Cordelia. While her backstory is very sympathetic and her motivations compelling, more than a few fans overlook the fact she murdered Davies, tortured and maimed Sully, and manipulated Erika throughout the game.
- Les Yay: In episode 4, Cordelia kisses Erica.
- Spiritual Successor: The developers has mentioned the Gabriel Knight series as a main inspiration, and Jane Jensen is indeed listed as a Story Consultant in the credits.
- Moebius: Empire Rising is one to this game for being written by Jane Jensen, using the same (slightly buggy and awkward) engine, having a lot of detail in furniture and decorations, and an emphasis on psychic powers.
- Squick: Dealing with dismembered eyes, ears, and tongues at the end of the Wise Monkey case. Really, the whole Wise Monkey case.
