The Play:

  • Designated Hero: Stine. He's shocked and dismayed when it seems like his wife is going to leave him for the quite justifiable reason that he is having an affair with his producer's secretary (and if his wife's song is any indication, this isn't the first time he's stepped out), but he doesn't seem to realize that he's done anything wrong... and she ends up back in love with him in the finale no questions asked.

The Movie:

  • Awesome Music: The soundtrack by Gabriel Yared is quite beautiful, enhancing the most emotional moments from the movie.
  • Esoteric Happy Ending: Considering there's no real conclusion to the film other than a Gainax Ending, no indication is ever given if Seth will ever get over Maggie's death or fall in love again. He's now destined to age and die (possibly alone given his true love is dead) without even the comfort of the love of his life or a family and even the good he could possibly due for people who need his help is now extremely limited given he's been stripped of his angelic powers. While the ending is usually interpreted at him now being joyful at being human, since there's no dialogue Seth can also be seen as either thinking of committing suicide or raging against God because his life is worthless without Maggie in it and/or being unable to return to his former life as an angel.
  • Questionable Casting: Nicolas Cage as comforting, beautiful angel. Of course, he does a pretty good job and it helps that this movie was made BEFORE he started racking up debt and taking any role possible.
