- Seasonal Rot: It's a debate as to whether it's more disliked than Xenocide but both are perceived as considerable drops in quality from the first two novels.
- Tear Jerker: Near the end when the young clone of Peter is watching Si Wang-Mu on the beach on the Samoan planet. It went something like "Because it's enough for me that when I touched your shoulder you leaned on me, and when you felt me slipping away, you called my name." That and the preceding paragraph.
