• Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: Early on, Crystal has a nightmare about a giant black cat pouncing on her. Unlike most of the nightmare sequences in the books this isn't some kind of fake out as we are told from the beginning it's a nightmare. It also has nothing to do with the plot and other than her mentioning to her parents that she had a nightmare it's never brought up again.
• Critical Backlash: After Blogger Beware 's infamously scathing review of the book, it became widely disliked as a contender for the worst book in the series for being supposedly an ugly entry with a bad moral. Years later, it hasn't exactly been rediscovered as a classic, but some have questioned exactly what made it so hated to begin with, some of those feeling the ugliness was exaggerated, the moral was clearly not meant to be serious, and appreciating its attempts at extreme body horror.
• The Scrappy: A villainous example would be Vanessa, who fans dislike for cruely cursing the kids for a silly reason. What cements her as this for people is how she is not punished or defeated in the end like most villains in the series.
• Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Vanessa is likely meant to be portrayed as someone who was trying to teach Crystal and Cole manners but instead she comes across as a petty person whose curses are overblown out of proportion for perceived slights and never gets called out on it.
