YMMV / Cheyenne Autumn

Go To

  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: The Dodge City sequence. The movie suddenly diverts from the main storyline into a mostly comical bit where Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday play poker while the town freaks out about the Cheyenne. The only real thread connecting it to main plot is when the cowboy who scalped the Cheyenne scout shows up. Notably, most of this sequence was removed from most prints of the movie after its initial theatrical run, and only restored for its video release in the '80s.
  • Broken Base: The "Battle of Dodge City" is one of the most controversial scenes of John Ford's career. Detractors call it Padding, a goofy Breather Episode that was included mainly to get Jimmy Stewart into the film. Defenders say it's a brilliant Take That! to the lighthearted type of Western that had become dominant by 1964, and of the usual Western mythology, showing heroes like Wyatt Earp to be self-centered jerks and Western townsfolk to be bigoted hotheads.
