YMMV / Chasm: The Rift

Go To

  • Cult Classic: Seems to be fondly remembered by those who played it back in the day, especially in Eastern Europe. It seems to have had a strong influence on David Szymanski (the creator of DUSK), as well as the makers of Perilous Warp and Hrot.
  • Funny Moments: Relieve an executioner of both his arms, stand on an elevated plaform and watch him pathetically trying to get you.
  • Goddamned Bats: The scorpions from the first two time epochs are so small that coupled with the very restricted mouselook (you couldn't look straight down) means you'd had to actually keep distance from them in order to even shoot at them.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: It's a Quake-inspired time travel first person shooter released in 1997. It got to beat a Quake-engine-powered time travel first person shooter that was supposed to come out by 1997 to punch.
  • Narm: The final boss' scream sounds like somebody pumped a gallon of hydrochloric acid up an elephant's butt.
  • Nightmare Fuel: There is a bit of it, for example the medieval cemetery with its ghastly ambient noise. That and the final boss' otherworldly breath.
  • Too Awesome to Use: The blade gun and laser crossbow suffer a bit to the scarcity of their ammunition. You do get a decent amount of ammo for the laser crossbow in the medieval levels, which is thematically appropriate.
  • Visual Effects of Awesome: While it had to sacrifice level design complexitynote  to make it feasible for the average 1997-PC hardware at the time note , for it's time the graphics were gorgeous, with the enemy model being acclaimed for the detail at the time.
