  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: Calvin distracting the airport security guard (played by Kumail Nanjiani). Calvin's story falls apart when it's revealed there's a large snake in the cooler. The guard screams, then laughs and reveals it's his pet, and...we immediately cut to the next scene, with Bob and Calvin having apparently succeeded at their plan offscreen.
  • Captain Obvious Reveal: Phil is the black badger. Surprised? After all, he was the only other person with Stone when the plans were stolen.
  • Catharsis Factor: Bob knocking Trevor unconscious at the high school reunion.
  • Diagnosed by the Audience: Bob has absolutely no inhibitions in physical interactions with other people or in speech, confesses to having absolutely no friends except for one "best friend" whose only interaction with him was a single moment of public kindness twenty years before, and kills and maims people unhesitatingly while rambling innocently.
  • Ending Fatigue: A minor case. Calvin and Bob save the day. They then hitch a helicopter ride to their reunion, where Calvin sees his wife, explains everything, and apologizes. They go into the dance, and Bob wins Reunion Homecoming King. He punches Trevor on the way to the stage, accepts the award to cheers, end scene, right? Nope, he has a speech, too. Then he goes into the crowd and runs into his old high school flame. They share a romantic conversation, then we get a brief dance scene with the two couples that seems like another perfect end, complete with freeze frame on the last shot...but there's yet another entire extra epilogue scene after that.
  • Escapist Character: Bob Stone. He's a Formerly Fat kid born with an Embarrassing Last Name (Weirdicht) that was picked on everybody as a teenager who ends up growing up to be a muscular Adonis after developing a six hour workout routine later in life. He grows up to be a CIA agent that's an extremely formative fighter who also attracts numerous women and manages to save the day by stopping his rogue partner and a terrorist from purchasing important satellite codes. The film ends with him being crowned prom king at his twentieth high school reunion, getting to punch out his bully, and be cheered on by everyone in attendance.
  • Fridge Logic: So nobody checked to see if the bloodstains in the elevator matched Phil's DNA?
  • Heartwarming Moments: During the Hilarious Outtakes featured in the credits, Pam's actress during the interrogation scene steals the opportunity to tickle Dwayne Johnson. He breaks character and starts laughing immediately.
  • Ho Yay: The film is brimming with homoerotic subtext between Bob and Calvin. You don't have to look hard to find credence to the theory that Bob Stone is actually in love with Calvin Joyner. At one point, they even role-play as husband and wife, complete with cuddling and even Bob briefly smooching Calvin. Later, Bob reveals that he's had Calvin's letterman jacket since high school and admits that he used to sleep in (or on) it.
  • Jerks Are Worse Than Villains: Even though Phil is the Big Bad, he is still far more entertaining than Jerk Jock Trevor, who bullied Bob Stone in high school by throwing him into the gym while he was still naked from taking a shower. Twenty years later, when Bob runs into him again, he continues to make fun of him and still feels quite proud of what he did to him in high school. Fortunately, he gets his comeuppance when Bob, who has had enough of his antics, knocks him out cold.
  • Narrowed It Down to the Guy I Recognize: Yeah, like you're really gonna get Aaron Paul and just kill him off before the film even starts.
  • Spiritual Successor: To Ride Along, which also has Kevin Hart playing a somewhat nebbishy guy who is dragged through an action plot by a badass character, and becoming an Action Survivor.
