YMMV / Catacomb Fantasy Trilogy

Go To

  • Game-Breaker: X-terminators are meant to be used on a large number of enemies coming in from different directions. Using one shoots out magick missiles in every direction. And that really means in every direction. There are dozens of them in total. As a result, there's no enemy in the game that can withstand your going next to it and launching several x-terminators so that a great portion of the missiles hit the one enemy. (Perhaps even all of them, since monsters seem to be able to occupy the same space as the player character, leading to automatic hits both ways.)
  • Nightmare Fuel: Rather than using the Wolf3D/DOOM-style HUD of its successor trilogy (your face getting more bloodied and bruised as your health gets lower), Catacomb 3-D instead shows your character's face as a life meter that gradually fills up with a picture of a skull as you get closer to death. As you can see, this looks insanely creepy when the skull image begins overtaking your facial portrait.
  • Sequel Displacement: Catacomb 3-D is far better-known than its 2D predecessors, Catacomb and Catacomb II, to the point that virtually every trope example listed here is for 3-D onwards.
