YMMV / Cast Away

  • Awesome Music: The film is known for having a minimalist music score, with Chuck's time on the island having no score at all. It isn't until after Chuck escapes the island and loses Wilson along the way that we get hit with an emotionally moving score composed by Alan Silvestri.
  • Ending Fatigue: Once Chuck returns to land, it's at least half an hour left. (Not that the trailer didn't reveal basically everything beforehand...)
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Wilson. Never speaks a word, is round and white and yet it still remains extremely popular to this very day. Yup, we're talking about the volleyball.
  • Fanon: It's implied that he makes this choice in the ending shot, but a lot of people like to believe that Chuck goes on to live a happy new life with Bettina.
  • Memetic Mutation:
  • Narm Charm: One of the most famous examples, just before Chuck returns home: Wilson's 'death', in which Wilson slowly floats away as Chuck screams its name and that he's sorry. Objectively, it's completely stupid, since the scene boils down to a man getting tearful over a volleyball slowly drifting into the ocean, but the music, Tom Hanks' acting, and the whole movie prior setting up how much Chuck relies on Wilson as his one "friend" all comes together to make this feel like a Tear Jerker.
  • Slow-Paced Beginning: The film takes at least a half hour to setup everything before Chuck winds up stranded on the island.
  • Squick: Chuck removing his tooth is not a pleasant sight.
