• Harsher in Hindsight: Betty Gore, who complains about not having lost the weight she gained when pregnant with her first child, and calls herself a "tub of lard" is played by Melanie Lynskey, who has been vocal about being fat-shamed by Hollywood and developing bulimia as a result; even being pressured by a producer on the set of Yellowjackets to lose weight for sex scenes leading to her fellow co-stars writing a letter against his actions.
• Hollywood Homely: Somewhat, Betty is depicted as a frumpy housewife with a Weight Woe but it's clear that aside from the unflattering 70s hair and matronly clothing that Melanie Lynskey (and Betty, both in-series and Real Life) are pretty women, with Betty even being popular for her looks in high school.
• Squick: Betty Gore was struck with the ax 41 times total, 28 times on the head alone. And her eyes were chopped out.
• Woobie: A few in the series.
  • Pat Montgomery starts the series a contented husband with a high-paying job, the cheerful homemaker wife, and two adorable children only to find out he's been cheated on, his wife had more affairs and she likely (in his mind) killed a friend of their's from Church.
  • Christina Gore, even before her mother's murder. We see that she tries to cheer up her dour and moody mother, her summer of fun cut short due to her mother dying, her dad quickly starts replacing his late with a woman from church that controls her eating. It is hard to know how she felt that the woman who took care of her and took her to see The Empire Strikes Back was the woman that ruined her life.
  • Candy's children to a lesser extent. Their summer was ruined by their mother murdering their best friend's mother and they have to leave town due to their Mom's notoriety and not see their friend again.
