- Allegedly Free Game: The game can usually be played to win without using much premium currency, but certain functions (almost all to do with espionage) require gold to execute; many more are accelerated by use of gold. Gold is used in moderation by most players. However, the mobile version allows advertisement and obscure quiz challenges for gold.
- Distanced from Current Events: After the Russian invasion of the Ukraine in 2022, the "Europe: Clash of Nations" and "Europe: Road to War" maps were temporarily unavailable.
- Game-Breaker: Taking the Americas. In the World at War map (Call of War's flagship map, and the largest) if a coalition (or rarely, a single player) manages to unite all of the Americas, given a large enough navy they can project massive amount of force while keeping their core provinces, and hence their industry, completely invulnerable. If you're playing in Asia, Europe, or Australasia, it's generally a good idea to encourage an Enemy Civil War or Enemy Mine between North and South American coalitions to prevent this.
