YMMV / California Split

Go To

  • Cult Classic: Regarded by gambling enthusiasts (especially poker players) as one of the most realistic film depictions of their pastime.
  • Fair for Its Day: Helen Brown's crossdressing and/or possible transgender status is Played for Laughs but she isn't personally demeaned all that much.
  • Ho Yay: The sexual tension between Bill and Charlie is so thick you could cut it with a knife, with Charlie even planting a kiss right on Bill's lips during the craps table climax. When they part ways at the end it feels more like a break-up.
  • One-Scene Wonder: Many characters pop in and out of the story, but the foul-mouthed woman who Bill sits by at the bar and Barbara Ruick as the friendly barmaid at the big Reno poker game stand out, and of course Robert Altman veteran Bert Remsen as Helen Brown.
  • Retroactive Recognition: Jeff Goldblum, in a very early and very brief role as Bill's boss at the magazine. Thankfully he lost the acne soon after.
  • Spiritual Successor: Much different in plot and tone, but the presence of Elliott Gould and the depiction of the seedier side of SoCal in The '70s make it one for The Long Goodbye.
