YMMV / Bulldog Drummond

  • First Installment Wins: The books written by Sapper are far more well known then those that came after, and even of those books, the first is the one that people are most likely to have read nowadays. You can actually see that demonstrated on this very wiki, with multiple references to the events of that book and of its main villain with very little beyond.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: In the fourth book (written in 1926), a character predicts that a future war between France and Germany is inevitable, unless "a weapon so frightful, that by its very frightfulness war would be impossible because no other country would dare to fight" was devised (the latter, a deadly neurotoxin, is the McGuffin of the book). The future war did indeed break out in 1939, and nuclear deterrents have, roughly, taken the place of the neurotoxin in preventing subsequent European wars.
  • Values Dissonance: The casually nationalistic and racist tone of the novel and heroic characters has led the book to suffer this. The argument has been made that even by the standards of the time Drummond is an extremist, to the extent that it's suggested that had he been a real person, Drummond would have slotted very nicely into Oswald Mosley's fascist party.
