YMMV / Buffy the Vampire Slayer S2E9 "What's My Line?: Part 1"

Go To

  • Genius Bonus: Buffy snarking that being dead is not too dissimlar from her life as it is: "my hair and fingernails continue to grow." This is a reference to the fact that, after death, hair and fingernails appear to grow just a little bit longer. This was often considered evidence for vampires back in the day. However, the appearance is actually due to the contraction of the surrounding skin.
    • The character "Dalton" may be a nod to the chemistry scientist John Dalton (1766-1844), who introduced the hypothesis of "atomism." While the vampire Dalton wears a beard, unlike the human scientist, their glasses, hair, and clothing are virtually identical.

  • Harsher in Hindsight: Xander, during his usual teasing of Cordelia, implies that guys call her an "easy ride". He then follows up this remark with "don’t worry, it's just locker room talk". Ever since the 2016 U.S. presidential election, when soon-to-be-President Donald Trump got caught bragging about groping women through a hidden camera, "locker room talk" (Trump's excuse for his comments) has become synonymous with men who make inappropriate advances on women and then brag about it in private. In other words, "locker room talk" has come to represent a culture of men who don't respect women. In this evolved context, Xander's comment now looks far worse than it did at the time.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • Buffy being horrified that her advised career option is "police". In the sequel comic, working as a freelance police consultant for San Francisco PD on cases involving the supernatural eventually becomes the way she (barely) pays her bills. Because that pretty much is the only kind of legal income-paying activity that can be reasonably combined with the Slaying and the Magic Council related duties she takes on. And she really does seem to like the work.
    • During career day, Willow questions out loud if she likes tress or shrubs (another word for bushes) more. Xander replies, "That's between you and your god." and that he definitely likes shrubs, while Buffy says "No shrubs for me!" Willow turns out to be a lesbian.
