- Being the victim of Larry Zbyszko's Heel Turn. Keep in mind that in 1980, wrestlers usually didn't turn as part of a storyline, instead reserving it for a gimmick change or a move to a different territory. The previously good-guy Zbyszko struggling in an exhibition bout against Sammartino, and responding by snapping and brutally attacking him with a chair, stunned audiences in attendance and led to one of the most captivating feuds of the era.
- His loss of the championship to Ivan Koloff was one of the most shocking moments in the history of wrestling, on par with the ending of The Streak. The entire crowd was so stunned that the silence made Bruno think he'd lost his hearing.
- Tear Jerker: Watching Bruno lose his title to Ivan Koloff brought many fans to tears. The referee would not hand the title to Koloff because he feared doing so would ignite a riot from the crowd due to the emotional atmosphere.
