YMMV / Breaking Bad S5 E15: "Granite State"

Go To

  • Everybody Is Jesus in Purgatory: A number of fans have attempted to find symbolism in the choice of Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium as the only entertainment Walt is given. However, the official story of why the writers picked this movie is just because Vince Gilligan thought the movie had a goofy title, which offered just a little levity in an otherwise incredibly grim episode.
  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • The cameo by Charlie Rose, at the time a highly trusted and respected journalist/interviewer who years later would become a horrible Broken Pedestal when his long history of sexual harassment was revealed, adds a whole new level of irony to him interviewing Gretchen and Elliot being the trigger to get Walt to set his affairs in order.
    • Saul wittily remarking how Ed Galbraith will be able to get him a job managing a Cinnabon in Omaha, Nebraska if he's lucky becomes significantly more tragic come Saul's titular show, where "Gene Takavic" is shown to be paranoid, antisocial and miserable at having become exactly what he hoped to be.
    • Furthermore, Saul sadly noting that he's nobody's lawyer anymore, and that the fun and games are over for him becomes even more heartbreaking when one takes into account how Saul's entire Slimeball Married to the Job persona exists to shove down the trauma, guilt and self-loathing of Jimmy McGill, who now has nothing to distract him from his past.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Fans of Friday Night Lights get to see Landry killing Epyck.
  • One-Scene Wonder: Robert Forster as Ed Galbraith, the vacuum cleaner repairman and identity eraser, though he would reappear in El Camino and Better Call Saul.
  • Shocking Moments: Todd shooting Andrea in cold-blood while forcing Jesse to watch, widely considered an absolute Gut Punch in an episode that is only Gut Punches.
