  • Bran Mak Morn shows his dark side when he threatens Atla and seeks the aid of chthonic beings in "Worms of the Earth". However, his desire for vengeance is sympathetic, as he is losing his authority to the vastly more powerful Romans and was forced to watch the crucifixion of one of his subjects who received only a sham trial, with that damn Titus Sulla gloating all the while.
  • Atla is sarcastic, lecherous, and devoid of (human) warmth. However, it's hard not to pity her given her heritage, loneliness, and isolation, which have left her so bitter that she doesn't even care if Bran Mak Morn kills her.
