YMMV / Boyfriend to Death

Go To

  • Awesome Art: The game has some very well-drawn art.

  • Diagnosed by the Audience: It's clear there's something very wrong with Lawrence. Word of God has said he's always had problems, but refused to officially diagnose anything.

  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Ren had one scene where he appeared in the first game, and a single ending relating to him. It's compounded by the fact that this scene is easily missable if the player makes a single wrong decision. He still became fairly popular and garnered quite a bit of fanfic and fanart. This is probably the reason he got his own route in the second game.
  • Even Better Sequel: The second game is regarded as this, mostly due to having more gameplay elements and much more content, amongst other things.
  • Jerkass Woobie: By the second game, Ren Hana. He's really been through a lot since childhood, but that doesn't change the fact that he's also incredibly mentally unstable and can kill you at the drop of a hat if you so much as provoke him the wrong way.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • Pisswolf. Explanation
    • "Besides, I'm not going to end up like that freezer burnt bitch." Explanation (spoilers)
  • Narm:
    • The occasional typos in-game can be worth a chuckle.
    • Strade's murder methods can bring to mind a cheesy B-movie serial killer.
    • When you think about it, it's a bit ridiculous that survival on Rire's route is ultimately dependent on a game of hide-and-seek.
    • Vincent saying word-for-word that it'd be a shame if something happened to the player's feet. Yes, it's Squick, but it's also kinda funny.
    • Apparently, people have accused Lawrence of being a witch. Accusing someone of witchcraft in the modern day sounds silly in it's own right, and it gets worse when you remember he's a grown manHistory lesson.
  • Narm Charm: Despite anything listed above, those moments- and the entire game- still manage to be pretty damn scary.
  • One-Scene Wonder: Ren, in the first game.
  • Shocking Moments:
    • Ren's route has several.
      • The fact that he has a route (and it's the largest one with 27 endings), since he was a minor character who had only one ending relating to him in the previous game.
      • Strade's dead body.
      • Seeing Lawrence Bound and Gagged in the chair and being instructed to kill him. Even if you refuse, Ren brutally murders him or he tells Lawrence to kill you (which he does).
    • Lawrence's infamous "You took too many drugs." ending, mostly since it makes absolutely no sense.
  • Visual Effects of Awesome: Lawrence's "You took too many drugs." ending has received massive praise for being gorgeously drawn and having some impressive Interface Screw.
