YMMV / Bossfight

Go To

  • Catharsis Factor: Princess Sparklemuffin telling off Zarkazaan in the finale, explaining exactly how useless and senseless her philosophy is, and how she's doing nothing to bring about the change she claims she wants. Even when the sorceress calls her a slut and rejects her attempts to befriend her, the princess maintains her kindness and empathy with a wonderfully cathartic Heroism Motive Speech.
  • Common Knowledge: Zarkazaan is not a caricature of Anita Sarkeesian. Liana has gone on record to say she views the character as a Loony Fan who quotes her without understanding the context, as well as parodying some particularly zealous classmates from her time at university in Women's Studies. Zarkazaan's "cool chick okay with sexism" taunt is however based off something Anita said directly about her in early 2021.
  • Creepy Cute:
    • Mophisto is an archdemon trapped in the body of a cute cat.
    • Shao Kind is a furry monster that should be terrifying, but they're in rainbow colours and have a soft spot for cute cats. D'awww...
  • Do Not Do This Cool Thing: The in-universe 'Angel Protocol' is meant to be a Stylistic Suck parody of bad lecherous shows from the 2000s - but some aspects of it look quite fun.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • Ann Rearden ended up becoming unexpectedly popular, despite only having a major role in the second episode (with a cameo in the end credits of another). Her Big Damn Heroes moment in the finale was extremely well received, and she was quickly announced as appearing in the Song of Sparklemuffin game too.
    • The Silk Angels are only images of characters in the game within a game, but definitely stuck in memory. Tomoe was even announced as being a character in Song of Sparklemuffin.
  • Funny Moments:
    • Ann Rearden's stoicism shaking when she sees a ridiculous promotional image for one of the Silk Angels. She has to remind herself that she's not the audience.
"These images are subject to change." (beat followed by grimace) "Significant change."
    • Zarkazaan getting her comeuppance when comment moderation is turned off her livestream. One troll proposes, because "I want to experience A Fate Worse Than Death."
Zarkazaan: "Marry you? That is harrassment!"
Troll: Your voice hurts my ears.
Zarkazaan: Your ears hurts MY voice.
    • The princess's pets getting sidetracked about the time Sparkepuppy pooped on the Sparkle Carpet.
Sparklepuppy: That was only one time.
    Sparklekitty: It was disgusting.
  • Heartwarming Moments:
    • Ann Rearden being persuaded to pursue her dream of singing showtunes, and quitting working for N.I.C.E. Also doubles as an Awesome Moment.
    • Princess Sparklemuffin finding a child for Delores Faye to grant wishes for. The child gives such adorable wishes that Delores is moved and so ecstatic to have someone to help.
    • Liana even devoted a video to how many viewers admitted to crying Tears of Joy at Princess Sparklemuffin's speech saying "kindness can be a superpower".
    • In said speech, Princess Sparklemuffin talks about the real lasting legacy of Mario and Princess Peach; teaching generations of children that the unconventional "chubby, hairy guy" can be the hero too (notably being released in a decade amid majority action heroes looking like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jean Claude van Damme or Steven Seagal).
"Maybe the message there isn't that pretty blonde princesses are some kind of reward? Maybe the message is that chubby, hair guys can still have hope that someone will see them and like them for who they are. That's the kind of world I want."
  • Love to Hate: Zarkazaan is an incredibly effective villain, admittedly quite a badass and very fun to watch - in spite of being a complete Hate Sink.
  • Mexicans Love Speedy Gonzales: Liana said she expected a lot of backlash for playing a trans character, but SJW ended up one of the most popular characters in the series.
  • Moe: Princess Sparklemuffin of course! A character that should be saccharine, but her optimism and loving nature makes her very huggable.
  • Moral Event Horizon: A lot of viewers felt Zarkazaan crossed it when she called Princess Sparklemuffin a slut.
  • One-Scene Wonder:
  • She Really Can Act: Liana has been best known for her YouTube videos and presenting in the past few years, but she spent several years in television and improv theatre (she's also a Shakespearean actress). This series reminds people how effective an actress she is; playing different characters so effortlessly they feel like different people.
  • Tear Jerker: Although Played for Laughs, the amount of abuse and Gaslighting SJW had to suffer under Zarkazaan's mentoring; she even made him give up his favourite sword and labelled it 'problematic'.
  • Tough Act to Follow: Because Lady Bits was so successful, and was a Gateway Series for many of Liana's fans, she commented that a lot of viewers were expecting Bossfight to be a Creator-Driven Successor - and thus were unhappy at how different it was. Around Episodes 2 and 3, the series experienced some Growing the Beard.
  • Unconventional Learning Experience: Much like Gamer's Guide to Feminism and Lady Bits, the series teaches a lot of useful information about cultivation theory, feminism, the Male Gaze and the effects of pop science.
