YMMV / Bonnie Raitt

Go To

  • Career Resurrection: A No-Hit Wonder in the 1970s, she went into the wilderness during the 1980s before making a major comeback in the early 1990s with Nick of Time, to the point that she became more popular in The '90s than she was in The '70s. Most of her best known songs are post-comeback.
  • Chart Displacement: Zig-zagged. Her only #1 hit to date has been on Billboard's Adult Alternative Airplay, and is 1998's "One Belief Away," unheard of by most people. And while both of her signature songs charted on the Billboard Top 100, most casual listeners might be surprised to learn that "Something to Talk About" charted 15 positions higher than "I Can't Make you Love Me."
  • Music Genre Dissonance: "I Can't Make You Love Me" is arguably Raitt's most recognizable song because its sound blurs the line between her usual country/rock/blues and more mainstream pop/soft rock. This has allowed it to ping-pong around radio stations of differing genres and reach a wider audience.
  • Spiritual Successor: For a time, Susan Tedeschi was billed as Raitt's spiritual successor - similarly a white female blues vocalist/guitarist with pop leanings - but Tedeschi has since moved to fronting the massive Tedeschi Trunks Band, embracing more of a southern rock sound in the process.
