  • Love to Hate: Det. Loren Visser is such a memorable villain.
  • Nightmare Fuel: Imagine yourself regaining consciousness after being shot, only to find yourself being buried alive (by someone who you thought was dead, no less).
    • In several other ways, too, well described by Roger Ebert:
It keys into three common nightmares: (1) You clean and clean but there's still blood all over the place; (2) You know you have committed a murder, but you are not sure quite how or why; (3) You know you have forgotten a small detail that will eventually get you into a lot of trouble.
  • One-Scene Wonder: More like one-shot wonder, but the Stetson-adorned, smiling driver who flashes his headlights at Ray and aims a finger gun at him. Also doubles as a Big-Lipped Alligator Moment.
  • Paranoia Fuel: In addition to Nightmare Fuel, the ending certainly has this going for it, with Abby killing Visser thinking that he's Marty, only to hear him laughing about his demise from inside the bathroom where he was shot. Being stalked and threatened with murder by a vengeful ex-lover is one thing, it's a whole different kind of terrifying to be stalked and threatened with murder by a complete stranger.
  • The Woobie: Abby has it rough. She's stuck in a loveless marriage with an increasingly paranoid and violent husband, seeks solace in a very loyal and well-intentioned yet lethally stupid man who won't even clearly communicate with her, and is pursued by a ruthless killer. While she's the sole survivor in the end, it's not a happy or even bittersweet ending for her by any stretch.
