The Film

  • Cult Classic: Amongst martial arts fans for the very well choreographed fight sequences.
  • Magnificent Bastard: "The Killer", real name Chad Atkins, was a former kung fu champion who was disqualified from the Tournament of the Champions for injuring a contestant. After faking his death in a car crash, he reemerged three years later as a theatrical Serial Killer of martial arts champions, starting with his fellow tournament contestants. His modus operandi is to duel his victims to the death in disguise and in private areas while leaving minimal evidence that could be used to trace his real identity, quickly knocking out potential witnesses. When he decides to broadcast the murder of one of his victims live on the internet, he rigs the building he's in to explode the moment anyone steps foot in it and escapes before the police can track his location down. Continuing to evade the police while sending them cryptic messages, he finds a Worthy Opponent in Detective Ken O'Hara after a chance encounter with him during one of his attempted murders. He soon kidnaps O'Hara's wife and child and straps a timed bomb to them, forcing O'Hara to kill him so he can save his family, the bomb posthumously revealed a bluff as Atkins leaves a recording reminding he doesn't kill innocents.
  • Special Effects Failure: In the first fight, after the killer succeeds in killing his opponent and hoisting him over his head, the cable holding the "dead" actor up is clearly visible.

The Fanfic

  • Catharsis Factor: The older waterbenders standing up to Hama, and Katara finally killing her.
  • Heartwarming Moments: Despite the bleakness of the fanfic, there are several rays of sunshine.
    • The remnants of the Southern waterbenders who were captured long ago are freed from the prison and become Katara's guardians and teachers after Hama's death.
    • Despite being abused by Hama during her time in the prison, Katara still thinks about releasing the other prisoners when they finally escape from their cage.
    • The Southern waterbenders returning home.
  • Nightmare Fuel: The description of Hama bloodbending Katara.
    • Even if Hama had it coming, Katara using bloodbending against her to kill her.
  • Tear Jerker: Seeing how bitter Katara has become after four years locked up in the waterbender prison.
    • Sokka mentally beating himself up over losing Katara to the Fire Nation.
    • Of the happy variety, Gran-Gran seeing the stolen Fire Nation ship propelled by waterbending and realizing that her friends and her granddaughter are coming home.
  • The Woobie: Katara. Though she could fall under Jerkass Woobie for her resentment of Sokka at the end.
