• Alternative Character Interpretation:
  • To what extent Rorschach is a Big Dumb Object? While it being non-sentient is crucial to the central theme of the novel, we only have the cast's word to go on anything pertaining to it, and the scope of their insight is still limited.
  • Sarasti is both more human and more humane than Siri gives him credit for. Case in point: their final conversation, in which Sarasti (a) displays empathy, (b) asks Siri's forgiveness, and (c) admits, "I don't know what I'm doing."
• Aluminum Christmas Trees: At one point, Sarasti is shown analyzing some data presented as a bunch of screaming faces. Believe it or not, it's based on an actual method of data representation.
• Narm: For many readers, the sci-fi reimagining of vampires as an as-yet undiscovered prehistoric human subspecies is difficult to take seriously, especially when the novel wraps themes about human inferiority around them.
• Nightmare Fuel:
  • Most of the scenes inside Rorschach.
  • After spending most of the novel fairly passive, Jukka shows his true colours and brutally attacks and tortures Siri for little reason other than to prove a point.
• Tear Jerker:
  • Chelsea's death, via flashback.
  • Siri's reaction. He never gets to say goodbye — he can't figure out how.
