YMMV / Blade: The Series

Go To

  • Catharsis Factor: Marcus is the Big Bad of the show, but after his pre-vampire life is shown via flashback, it's hard not to cheer for him when he finally gets to kill Damek, the pureblood who raped and murdered his wife and left him to be tortured and turned.
  • Complete Monster:
    • Brian Boone begins as a familiar of Marcus Van Sciver. A corrupt cop who cleans up the vampires' messes and helps deliver innocent humans to them to be drained - usually prostitutes so that he can steal their earnings, and Marcus points out he's doing it far more often than requested. Boone is eventually disposed of by Marcus by being fed to the newly turned Krista Starr. Awakening as a vampire and escaping, Boone kills every vampire and human around to cover his tail before slaughtering his way across the state, murdering almost everyone who crosses his path before kidnapping a young woman to offer to the House of Armaya's vicious leader Damek in return for sanctuary, then using another vampire as a shield when Marcus's team comes to kill him.
    • Charlotte, Marcus's immediate superior in the House of Chthon, is a Pureblood vampire who is still physically a young girl. Sanctioning the Aurora experiments with numerous vampires killed, Charlotte also enjoys frequently killing human infants to feed on. After surviving Marcus's assassination attempt, Charlotte kills numerous humans to turn them as Cannon Fodder against Blade before using her appearance to trick and drain a nearby detective.
    • Damek of the House of Armaya is a greedy, thuggish mobster of a vampire who through his many centuries has killed countless people. In the late 1800s, Damek first met the then-mortal Marcus who refused to pay protection money. Damek proceeded to rape and murder Marcus's wife Isabelle, sending Marcus to be tortured and killed. Upon being confronted by Marcus, Damek reveals he has raped and killed so many, he cannot even remember Marcus or Isabelle, laughing at the irony of Marcus burning with hate for him over a century.
  • Draco in Leather Pants: Marcus is a ruthless murderer with largely selfish goals and little loyalty to anyone, but plenty of fans latch onto his handsomeness, high levels of intelligence and competence, chemistry with Krista, and genuinely tragic backstory.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Professor Caylo, the Addled Addict vampire expert, played by Randy Quaid, Badass Normal, FBI Agent Collins, Vegetarian Vampire Frederick, Glynnis (the Hyper-Competent Sidekick to pureblood Charlotte), Blade's father, Mr. Taka, Officer Flanigan and Viola (the last four of whom have a Hero of Another Story vibe in trying to care for a young Blade while he was experiencing his vampire cravings) are all popular characters despite not being in the main credits.
  • Fanon: Let's just saying Marcus actually killing Krista after the cliffhanger is pretty rare in fandom.
  • Growing the Beard: Episode two was felt to be better paced and acted than the pilot, and episode 5 was where some said the story really hit stride.
  • Poor Man's Substitute: Instead of Wesley Snipes, the creators hired rapper Kirk "Sticky Fingaz" Jones for the role of Blade in the TV series.
  • Vanilla Protagonist: Arguably Blade himself, due to his Poor Man's Substitute actor, humorlessness and (in most episodes) lack of any development or goals more complex than killing more vampires, while the others in the main cast seem more lively, complex, and competent themselves. Whether they appear throughout the whole show or only briefly, Returning War Vet turned conflicted spy among the vampires Krista, Shen (a Gadgeteer Genius out to avenge his sister), FBI agent turned Occult Detective Collins, brooding chessmaster and Tragic Villain Marcus, Dark Action Girl and Enigmatic Minion Chase (who gets some of the best fight scenes in the show, keeps people guessing with her loyalties, and has some charged sexual tension with Marcus and arguably Krista as well), the younger Blade who appears in flashbacks, benign vampires Sands and Frederick, and other vampire hunters or experts like Only in It for the Money Cain and Bunny-Ears Lawyer Melvin Caylo can all feel like they could have done fine making the show cool without Blade.
