YMMV / Blade Strangers

Go To

  • High-Tier Scrappy:
    • Curly's pretty much hated by most people due to her habit of spamming her gun attacks on her opponents from afar, keeping them from getting close.
    • Lina herself is by far one of the best characters due to the notable range on her normals despite some poor anti-air options, and her Giga Mine lockdown confirms with cross-ups added reward her with a solid amount of damage; a majority of characters find it very hard to break out once a good Lina player gets rolling.
    • Ali-Baba falls into the offensive spectrum of this; despite her lackluster damage, her bombs, mixups and command dash all allow her to dominate up in anyone's face. This makes her very hard to deal with whenever you're cornered or even remotely close to her. So far, perhaps only a very good Gunvolt player can compare.
  • Low-Tier Letdown: Master T.. He's a Close-Range Combatant that has almost no way to gap-close safely (meaning his answer to projectiles is non-existent) along with having a gimmicky neutral; the aforementioned Ali-Baba can do his job much better.
  • Memetic Psychopath: Kawase is given a pair of sushi knives, and she gets a little too...enthusiastic when using them in her supers. And then there's her plans to cook and eat a Mimiga...
  • Moe: Lina, although her Ax-Crazy / Omnicidal Maniac personality does detract from it a bit.
  • Older Than They Think: Curly and Quote's redesigns were apparently not created for this game. They actually date back to artwork seen on the official Japanese site for the DSi port of Cave Story, roughly 6 years before Blade Strangers.
  • That One Achievement: Nearly all of the online achievements fall under this category as most of them are "Win 10 League Matches against X Character," meaning a minimum of 140 matches, along with "Win 10 League Matches in a Row." Good luck getting any of those without someone to boost with.
  • Unexpected Character: Arguably, the entire roster is this, with the exception of the Original Generation Characters and Shovel Knight, who hails from a very popular game and had been The Cameo in many indie games beforehand. If you've heard of this game, it's probably because you saw one character and thought, "There's a fighting game where you can play as them? No Way!" Even in the case of Shovel Knight, he isn't an Unexpected Character, but he has Unexpected Characterization.
    • Really, who would honestly think Isaac would ever find his way into a fighting game?
    • For the One-Year Anniversary of the game, Studio Saizensen decided to update the game by adding three new characters, two of them being Aban Hawkins (Who already got featured in Crystal Crisis) and Summer Kawase. The third however is Piaa from Doki Doki Poyacchio, a really obscure PlayStation game that came out all the way back in 1998. She's not even the main character of that game!
