YMMV / Black Market of Bulletphilia ~ 100th Black Market

Go To

  • Anti-Climax Boss: Many players think the fight against the incident's culprit is too short and ends too abruptly to feel like a satisfying conclusion to the game.
  • Contested Sequel: Rivals Violet Detector as one of the most contested entries in the series. Fans tend to enjoy the change in pace from previous games, main and spinoff included, and enjoy collecting and using the various ability cards the game has to offer. Others, however, heavily criticize the game for being repetitive, as after a while you'll start seeing the same generic bullet patterns repeatedly, sometimes two at the same time, and needing to play through each stage repeatedly to get the different cards can quickly grow tiring.
  • Difficulty Spike: Jo'on's Ability Card, "Irresistible Julie Fan", sets the difficulty of enemy waves to its maximum for as long as you have it equipped. This particular card also comes with its own difficulty level known as "Overdrive".
  • Game-Breaker: Being a roguelike in nature, there's bound to be absolutely ridiculous cards and combos that makes the game a breeze. The "Drenched Giant Snake" makes your magic circle freeze bullets instead of slowing them down. Handy utility, but could work against you on the wrong patterns. Combo it with three copies of "Ferocious Komainu", which shortens the circle's cooldown time, and suddenly the bullets you catch in the magic circle have become a non-issue and a veritable farm of bullet money.
  • It's the Same, Now It Sucks!: The game recycling the staff roll theme from Unconnected Marketeers was not well received by several fans, who think that it doesn't quite fit with this game (despite being a direct sequel), and that there should have been a brand new staff roll theme instead.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: This is the first Touhou game to add roguelite elements like meta-progression and heavy use of randomness. The reception to this was mixed, with its detractors claiming that the former made the game too grindy, and the latter made it too unpredictable and luck-based.
  • Unexpected Character: Spin-off shooters tend to have old characters reappear constantly, so that's not a surprise. In the case of Nitori however, she not only reappeared in a shooter for the first time since Impossible Spell Card, but also has an important role in the story and happens to be the only character to get new dialogue portraits, something which almost never happens for older characters.
