YMMV / Bill & Ted Face the Music

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Were the old princesses really trying to convince their younger selves to leave Bill and Ted? They're the princesses who are still with the old Bill and Ted, not the princesses who left the loser Bill and Ted, and are from a future where Billie and Thea played the song, so it could be that they were actually trying to convince their younger selves to stay with Bill and Ted and work things out.
  • Ass Pull: Suddenly it turns out the people in the 26th century just have a vague understanding of a "Preston" and "Logan" who would create their utopian society, and it being about Bill and Ted writing a song was just one of several theories, with them lucking out that it happened to be the one Rufus believed. Though this does make his somewhat desperate "They do get better!" at the end of the first film even funnier.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: The Robot (Dennis Caleb McCoy) has become immensely popular among fans thanks to Anthony Carrigan's hilarious and likable performance.
  • Fanon: With Little Bill and Little Ted clearly intended to be boys in Bogus Journey even if it was never explicitly stated, some fans took to viewing Billie and Thea as both being trans. It helps that Brigette Lundy-Paine (who plays Billie) is non-binary.
  • Genius Bonus:
    • Jimi Hendrix really starts digging the trip when he encounters Mozart. The real Hendrix was interested in music theory and history. Prior to his death, he was planning to immerse himself in musical study so he could pursue more ambitious compositions.
    • Bill and Ted are told to complete their song by 7:17 PM. Starting from a 12 AM day to 7:17 evening is a time of 19.283 hours. Converted into seconds, it's 69,420 seconds.
    • According to The Bible (specifically Revelation 20:14), "Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire" during the Apocalypse. Here, Death was essentially banished to Hell when he snuck Bill and Ted into Heaven in the second film. What happens decades later? The End of the World as We Know It.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: With the release of WandaVision, people have taken images of White Vision and added the caption "I am Dennis Caleb McCoy."
  • It's the Same, Now It Sucks!: Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey has been called one of the most original sequels of all time, but Bill and Ted having to perform a world-uniting concert with a detour in Hell while being chased by a robot assassin from the future is Bogus Journey's plot again, and the subplot about the daughters recruiting historical characters is the main plot of the first movie.
  • Moe: Billie and Thea behaving dudely like their fathers can come off as adorable.
  • Narm Charm: Jeremiah Craft is very clearly forcing an imitation of Louis Armstrong's iconic croaky voice, but it fits perfectly into the goofy tone of the whole franchise.
  • Nightmare Fuel: In this film's iteration of Hell, countless people are shown falling into the fiery depths, screaming all the way.
  • Older Than They Think: Bill and Ted going to the future to learn the song they haven't written yet was already attempted in the Bill & Ted's Most Triumphant Return comic.
  • Questionable Casting: One frequent note of criticism is that the replacement actresses for the princesses are noticeably younger than Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter.
    • Though they are only a few years off age-wise from the characters. The perils of what happens when you start with Dawson Casting and then cast actors closer to the age, but everyone else who was originally cast has stayed on, so characters who should be younger seem older, and characters who are the right age seem even younger.
    • Still, with so many familiar faces, it's weird to have replacement actresses at all.
  • Surprisingly Improved Sequel: After a 29-year gap between the last movie, and the mixed reception it got, no one was expecting Face The Music to receive great reviews from both critics and fans alike, with a Tomatometer score of 81% on release, the same as Excellent Adventure.
