YMMV / Beyond Re-Animator

  • Awesome Music: Move your dead bones, bones, bones!
  • Surprisingly Improved Sequel: Most people consider this to be the best Re-Animator movie alongside the sequel.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: It's revealed that West's former partner (and co-star of the first two films) Daniel Cain had testified against him in court, explaining West's imprisonment. Considering West seemed to genuinely like Dan in the previous films, this not only could've added dimension to West but it also would've been a clever explanation for his crueler and colder characterization in this installment. Unfortunately, this backstory is only mentioned once by West in an offhanded manner and nothing comes from it. Meaning, Dan's Heel–Face Turn comes off more as an excuse to handwave his actor not coming back for the movie instead of an attempt to build character, which it most likely was.
    • Furthermore, reducing Howard Phillips to being Cain's Replacement Goldfish as a lowly assistant, instead of a new, serious Arch-Enemy of Herbert West's for the latter being responsible for his sister's brutal murder by a zombie. Much more could have been done with the repercussions of West's Mad Scientist actions having consequences on the world and people, and coming back to bite him, with Phillips growing up and becoming a sort of Shadow Archetype as a younger, rival Re-Animator, taking up West's work while he is away in prison.
