YMMV / Berwick Saga

Go To

  • Cult Classic: Few have played it, but those who have compare it favorably to TearRing Saga and Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War (which are both cult classics in their own right).
  • Fan Nickname: Kaga Sagas when talking about Tear Ring, Berwick and Vestaria collectively.
  • Friendly Fandoms: Similarly to its predecessor, Berwick Saga is considered an honorary Fire Emblem game due to both being created by the same person and thus sharing a lot of story and gameplay tropes with them. In particular though, due to this game's lessened emphasis on growths and more on base stats and weapons, it's very common for its fans to be members of the "hardcore" or Low Turn Count community for the main series Fire Emblem games.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: You could play a drinking game with how many mechanics found here have appeared in future Fire Emblem games. Hell, it even shares many similarities with Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • Kaga did it first, Kaga Jank, and screams of "KAGA!!!" are common phrases associated with Shouzou Kaga and (especially) this game.
    • Expect increases in more than 2 stats per level-up to be met with much enthusiasm, since this game dials back greatly on growth-based gameplay in favor of base stats, weapon skill, and combat/utility skills.
    • 150D... (Derrick as a whole is a meme similar to Arden from Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War).
    • A picture of Sylvis holding up a piece of paper saying "play Berwick Saga" seems to be making rounds around fan circles.
    • Elbert's provoke skill
  • Scrappy Mechanic: Weapons breaking based on RNG. Rather than using number-based system used by the Fire Emblem series, the game merely gives you hints about the chances of it breaking based on the colored indicator.
  • Sequel Difficulty Spike: The game is significantly harder than its predecessor, Tear Ring Saga, due to its unique mechanics such as a new turn system, breakable weapons dictated by the RNG and far more challenging maps with strong enemies.
  • Spiritual Successor: While Berwick Saga borrows less from the Fire Emblem series, its tone resonates somewhat with Fire Emblem: Thracia 776 in featuring an underdog struggle against seemingly impossible odds. Funnily enough, it shares a lot in common with Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn as well. It has fans suspecting both drew from the same notes Shouzou Kaga left over with Nintendo after he left. TearRing Saga may also have inspired plot elements in Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade (several similarities are apparent between the two).
  • Vindicated by History: The radical changes this game makes compared to its predecessor caused a minor Audience-Alienating Premise at first. Now? Not so much since more people are willing to give it a try in the years after Fire Emblem: Awakening was released and the various changes to Fire Emblem's formula (story and gameplay) it has made for better or for worse.
