YMMV / Bertie and Elizabeth

Go To

  • Anvilicious: Edward and Wallis are made to be unlikable, even granted that sympathy was against them. The same point could have been made more subtly.
  • Heartwarming Moments:
    • During the blitz, George and Elizabeth are shown walking about the ruined streets of London while children are shown bravely smiling and waving tiny Union Jacks for them.
    • Lionel Logue gives a smart telling-off to a courtier fussing over whether Bertie will be able to give a radio address properly, saying that a Determinator like Bertie is admirable more because he keeps going through difficulties, that he's a better fellow than most royals, and he'll make a damn fine King.
    • Another one, earlier in the movie: when Bertie finishes his first address as King on the radio without a single stammer, Elizabeth bolts (as much as any member of the British aristocracy can bolt) across the hall and into the broadcast room and all but throws herself into his arms.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Eileen Atkins plays Queen Mary here. She would play the exact same role in The Crown (2016) fourteen years later.
    • A more rapid example - Oliver Ford Davies appears as the Archbishop of Canterbury note . He plays the same role again in Johnny English just a year later.
