Despite how much characterization is given to the various contestants and their goals and talents, it is never revealed which one of them wins the make-up contest after the original one is called off.
The investigation into Dahlmann's murder focuses solely on the people involved in the contest, despite there being numerous juicy potential motives outside of that event based on rumors about Dahlmann that Lon recounts (not paying a $90,000 poker debt, carrying naked photos of society women in his wallet, etc.). While Wolfe is being hired to keep the contest from being ruined and not to solve the murder, it would have been interesting if people from those stories about Dahlmann showed up during the investigation.
