- Ho Yay: It's safe to say that Kenma is Matthew's Only Friend, and (given his Always Save the Girl tendencies), it's clear Matthew would do just about anything to keep him safe, no matter the cost to himself. While clearly deep, whether Matthe's feelings are romantic or platonic isn't clear yet. Matthew's father lampshades how close they are (mostly as a swipe to Matthew's self-esteem).
- Moral Event Horizon: This is not a nice story and even the more sympathetic characters face desperate situations. However, certain moments stand out:
- The Beast most obviously crossed it with the abduction of Kenma and the luring of Matthew into the Heartland with the goal of eating them both. Or Matthew, at least. The sadistic glee it displays in hunting Matthew shows that it's much more than an animal looking for its next meal.
- Matthew's father is implied to be very harsh and abusive, but he definitely crossed it if he murdered Kenma. Blackmailing and isolating Matthew is icing on that cake.
- Amelia, once you see how many keys she's collected.
- Possibly Matthew himself after he sacrifices Amelia's Living Memory of Jordan. How unforgivable this act is depends on whether Jordan is actually sentient, how responsible Matthew for his actions at that point, and whether Amelia could've even saved Jordan in the first place.
