YMMV / Becket

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Does Becket defy Henry out of sincere newfound piety, or does he simply want to preserve the autonomy of the Church from the Crown for the sake of his own power and influence? The play and film suggest the former (unless it's all an act), but for the historical figure of Thomas Becket, the second was probably more likely.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Richard Burton as Becket, a rare occasion for the title character to be this. As One-Scene Wonder shows, John Gielgud as Louis also reached this status. Donald Wolfit as Bishop Folliot, David Weston as Brother John, Pamela Brown as Eleanor of Aquitaine, Geoffrey Bayldon as Brother Philip, Riggs O'Hara as Prince Henry, Robert Rietty as Alexander III and Edward Woodward as Clement are all other examples.
  • One-Scene Wonder: John Gielgud as King Louis of France, Siân Phillips as Gwendolyn.
  • Retroactive Recognition: Edward Woodward has a minor role as a French courtier.
