YMMV / Beauty and the Beast (2014)

Go To

  • Americans Hate Tingle: Received positive-to-mixed reviews in France, but mixed-to-negative reception in outside of the country.
  • Funny Moments: Belle's sisters in general.
  • Heartwarming Moments: The fact that the Prince and Belle have two children is a lovely way for the Prince's story to come full circle. His cursed life began when he unwittingly killed his first wife (and their unborn child). The Book Ends to his curse ending is marrying Belle and starting a family.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Perducas stabs the Beast to death right after Belle convinces the Beast to let him go free. That's repaid, however.
  • Strangled by the Red String: The added subplots for Belle's brother and the Beast's first love have the side effect of making the romance between the actual Beauty and the Beast — who spend at most three days together — feel underdeveloped. In addition, scenes between them that were deeply romantic in earlier adaptations, like the Dance of Romance from the Disney film and Beauty's dreams of the prince in the original tale, are made considerably less romantic here with their dance ending with the Beast refusing to honor his promise to let Belle see her family and Belle screaming in response that she'll never love him and Belle's dreams being about the prince's former relationship with another woman instead of him courting her. When the Beast gets more tender and romantic scenes with his former wife who he killed and got cursed for than with Belle, something's gone seriously wrong.
  • Ugly Cute: The castle seems to be populated with...things that look like a cross between a rabbit and a dog.
    • These creatures taking the place of the servants, in the original version of the story the English translations usually describe them as "monkeys with human faces", but it's been said the word used in French may have meant small animals more generally back then.
