YMMV / Batman vs. Robin

Go To

  • Broken Base:
    • The film being a very loose adaptation of Night of the Owls, rather than a direct animated adaptation of said comic. Was it a wise decision to explore Bruce and Damian's relationship in an attempt to give it more depth? Or was it a bad choice that resulted in a sloppy adaptation that fails to give proper focus to either storyline?
    • Relegating Nightwing a.k.a Dick Grayson to a punching bag for most of the film. Dude loses to Damian in a sparing match, winds up wounded by several Talons in the climax and gets impaled to a wall when he tries to take on Talon. Is this a reasonable use of The Worf Effect or is it just another uninspired retread of how Dick was used in Son of Batman?
  • Contested Sequel: While Son of Batman wasn't well received in the first place, the fanbase is divided as to whether this sequel improves upon its predecessor or is an even worse installment.
  • He Really Can Act: Who would have looked at a child-murdering psychopath like Dollmaker and thought "Weird Al" Yankovic should play him? Apparently someone with great insight, because he was actually really good!
  • Nausea Fuel: The fate of the undead assassins that fight Batman in the museum. Two of them grow unstable and melt into a puddle of black blood; while the third one is blown in half, and the viewer gets to see its rotting internal organs after the corpse is retrieved by the Court of Owls.
  • Nightmare Fuel: The Dollmaker's brainwashed children act like rabid animals. Overlaps into Body Horror and a little bit of Unwilling Roboticization when many of them have chain saws, blow torches, and swords attached to amputated limbs. If you think lovable goofball Weird Al can't induce nightmares, think again.
  • One-Scene Wonder: Dollmaker. He's only in the movie for about two minutes and manages to be both terrifying and tragic, not to mention the novelty factor of being voiced (surprisingly well) by "Weird Al" Yankovic.
  • Surprisingly Improved Sequel: Though the film is divisive among comic book fans, it pleased critics and became the first instalment from the DC Animated Movie Universe to earn a "Fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: It is the loosest of adaptations of Night of the Owls and many people are disappointed that they altered so much of it to fit the Batman and Robin conflict (which was not present in the original comic).
