YMMV / Batman: Soul of the Dragon

Go To

  • Complete Monster: The Great Nāga is an ancient, powerful demon desiring to lead his fellow Nāgas to spread death and destruction across the world. Influencing the Kobra cult to perform sacrifices in order to free himself, the Great Nāga abandons Jeffrey Burr to perish upon being freed instead of using him as an Avatar, as he planned to use Richard Dragon as a vessel instead. Brutally beating down Batman, Lady Shiva, Richard Dragon, and Bronze Tiger, the Great Nāga openly desires to lay waste upon Earth and tries to take over Richard Dragon's body by force.
  • Funny Moments: Richard Dragon discovers Bruce has hidden cameras and microphones in the bar he owns, and turns up the volume on the feed. What do we hear? Two men discussing a shipment of contraband they're bringing into Gotham. That's right, Batman is running a Bad Guy Bar and using it to spy on the criminal underworld!
  • Jerkass Woobie: Sure Jade was a mildly unpleasant Alpha Bitch, but she didn't deserve to be murdered by someone she very clearly trusted.
  • Magnificent Bastard: The ruthless Lady Shiva is one of the most deadly and dedicated of O-Sensei's students. Quiet yet efficient and confident, Shiva proves her worth as the guardian of the Soul Breaker sword by utterly brutalizing Rip Jagger with a single finger, going on to become the feared ruler of Gotham's Chinatown underworld in the years following O-Sensei's sacrifice. Upon reuniting with her fellow students, Shiva helps them defeat the Cult of the Kobra by mowing down scores of their minions with nothing but her wits and skills, undisputed in her proclamations of being a living weapon.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character:
    • In the comic Jade Nguyen is Cheshire, one of the most dangerous Professional Killers in the world, and especially known for her skills as a Master Poisoner. One would think that this makes her the perfect fit to join Kobra as an Evil Former Friend but instead she's killed by Rip in the flashbacks, after showing neither any strong inclination towards villainy nor skill with poisons.
    • Richard Dragon also lacks development in this movie. We see Bruce breaking up with his girlfriend, Lady Shiva in her crime boss position, and Ben teaching one of his students, plus we hear dialogue about Bruce's dead parents, Bruce's business, and Ben's crime-ridden neighbourhood, but we never get any sense of where Richard is from, who his family are, or where he lives, and we never see him interact with his colleagues at the spy agency he works for. We don't get much context for his existence.
  • Unexpected Character: When promotional stills and clips showed an Asian woman with a similar appearance to Lady Shiva among O-Sensei's students, most believed that it was Shiva's sister Carolyn, but instead it turned out to be Jade Nguyen/Cheshire, who has only a vague connection to any of the other characters in the film and is better known for being a Master Poisoner than a martial artist.
