This is to take advantage of a pre-established weakness to magnets; wrapping an iron core in wire and passing currents through it produces electromagnetism. It's also established that the Vance building where the fight takes place is an old building from old Gotham, so it makes sense that it would use old-fashioned building materials like ferrous metals.
