YMMV / Barbie & The Diamond Castle

Go To

  • Fan-Preferred Couple: Due to the amount of Les Yay between them and them being best friends who live together, nearly all of the fan work ships Liana/Alexa or one of them with Melody, rather than the teased Liana/Jeremy and Alexa/Ian. It helps that Liana and Alexa are together for almost the entire movie and the narrative puts a lot of importance on their bond, while the romances with Jeremy and Ian are barely developed beyond some hinting.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Melody being trapped in a mirror, considering it mirrors the predicament of another female character in a children's program that has an extraordinary amount of Les Yay in it.
  • Les Yay: Alexa and Liana have more chemistry with each other than they do with their supposed love interests, Jeremy and Ian. They live together and own a business together, the movie places a great deal of emphasis on their close friendship (which shields them from evil magic) and their falling-out in the third act, mutual feelings of betrayal and near-instant regret can resemble a couple breaking up (especially with Alexa accusing Liana of choosing Melody over her). The fact that the colors of Alexa and Liana's Pimped-Out Dresses match the colors of the bisexual flag and the lesbian flag respectively only fuels this, as does the scene where they're standing on a rainbow bridge together.
  • LGBT Fanbase: Due to the aforementioned Les Yay betwen Liana and Alexa, and the plot focusing heavily on their close relationship (including focusing on it far more than than the heterosexual romances, which can come off as a narrative footnote), the movie has become popular among lesbian and bisexual women.
  • Memetic Mutation: Various clips of Sparkles and Lily dancing became widespread in early 2022 due to their unusually stiff and humanlike movements. These clips are often blended in with Stan Twitter and Aesthetic Warning, both of which also became widespread in that same year.
  • Strangled by the Red String: The romance between the two leads and their male counterparts has no real build-up, with the only hint that Alexa and Ian like each other is that they looked at each other while being introduced by their respective loved one, a Dance of Romance at the end, and throwing the boys flowers during a montage of them playing music.
  • Ugly Cute: Slyder is designed as a scary dragon but his face is kind of adorable-looking, especially when sad.
  • The Woobie: Melody. She had to flee her home when Lydia attacked and got trapped in a mirror when she tried to hide in it. When Liana and Alexa find the mirror, she doesn't want them to help her, because she fears that Lydia may find them.
