YMMV / Bai Ganyo

Go To

  • Harsher in Hindsight: In 1897, just two years after publishing Bai Ganyo, Aleko Konstantinov was assassinated, mistaken for his friend Mikhail Takev. The attack against Takev was ultimately due to a dispute caused by exactly the same kind of primitive and corrupt politics as those ridiculed by Konstantinov in Bai Ganyo. For this reason, it's often said that Bai Ganyo killed his own creator. Illustrated here.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: The book is most popular, especially among high school students, for its more humorous episodes, most of all Bai Ganyo's exploits in Vienna, where he made an ass of himself in a public bath, and Prague, where he invited himself over in Konstantin Jirecek's home, stayed for a disastrous lunch, and then moved to another apartment where he did all kinds of wacky shenanigans.
  • Misaimed Fandom: An unusual example where the state is the "fandom". When the new Lev was being introduced in the mid-2000s, there was a proposal to print Bai Ganyo's face on the 100 Leva bill on the grounds of him being a recognizable symbol of all things Bulgarian. Needless to say, someone had missed the memo that Bai Ganyo is shorthand for all the undesirable traits Bulgarians notice about themselves. The final design for the bill instead featured the author, Aleko Konstantinov.
  • Values Resonance: It is much commented how Bai Ganyo is still an accurate portrayal of the worst stereotypes of the Bulgarian's mindset over 100 years after the book was published.
