YMMV / BTS Island: In the SEOM

Go To

  • Continuity Lockout: If you know nothing about BTS then prepared to be lost with many of the in-jokes and interactions with them.
  • Demonic Spiders:
    • Wooden statues are small, can only be hit with power-ups, absorb Rocket blasts, can require multiple hits to disappear, and can often block areas. Good luck if they're placed on the only picnic mat spots you need to cover an area with.
    • In later levels, honey can have enough layers to make its contents invisible. Sometimes you'll need to free all bees, but not know which blocks contain bees and which ones contain regular blocks.
  • Funny Moments: The dialogue can often fall into this, especially if you keep in mind that, according to RM, it is the kind of stuff that the members would actually say.
    • The fact that the members' Idle Animation contains references to centuries-old in-jokes like the traffic dance.
    • Interacting with the fireplace will have the members spontaneously perform "Fire".
    • Early on, you can have Jungkook build something in sand, which can be either various types of sandcastles, or a sculpture of Bang PD. One of the levels created by RM similarly has the blocks shaped like Bang PD's face. No, BTS will not stop poking fun at their chairman.
    • When the BTS Bomb activates, the member present will appear on screen and do some sort of shout. True to SUGA fashion, however, he will flatly hum "doo-deedoo...".
    • When RM is concerned about having a tortoise for a pet, SUGA notes that it'll be fine; that hard shell will protect the tortoise if RM accidentally steps on it.
    • In almost every group interaction with an object (eating a meal, relaxing at the hot tub, drinking at the bar), j-hope will be on the side (or on a table) doing the robot.
    • Each member gets a personalized bungalow, and all members can interact with all bungalows:
      • The default action in Jungkook's bungalow is hitting the punching bag. j-hope, however, tries to climb it, while Jin hits it with a bat.
      • In V's bungalow, the default is playing the saxophone, with a decent-sounding melody. When RM does it, he gets a comically off-key squeak.
      • In Jimin's, the default is cooing at Gangyang, except for Jungkook, who stares at it in frustration because the cat still hates him.
      • Much like in V's, SUGA's bungalow has a piano for everyone to play. j-hope does the robot instead. RM picks his battles and reads a book.
      • In every single bungalow but RM's, Jin's and his own, SUGA falls asleep. On a chair. On the floor. On j-hope's dancing stage. On Gangyang's post.
      • Only RM and SUGA do the default action in RM's bungalow, which is reading. Jimin and V admire RM's moon jar, j-hope and Jungkook swimnote , and Jin goes fishing. In a pool.
      • Jin's bungalow has a table to prepare hwe (which involves cutting fish). Only Jin, SUGA and Jungkook do it properly; RM and Jimin simply shrug at it in defeat, j-hope stares at it in fear, and V giggles at it in a "yeah, no way I'm doing it" way.
    • After SUGA makes everyone drinks, j-hope gets drunk...even though SUGA has to keep telling him there was no alcohol in the drinks.
  • Goddamned Bats:
    • Coconuts require up to 3 hits to disappear, and they interrupt Rocket blasts. While not too bad in small quantities, they can cover significant portions of the screen (and in some later levels, start filling it by appearing through portals) and make Rockets almost (if not entirely) useless.
    • Butter doesn't block power-ups like coconuts do, but occupies multiple blocks and requires multiple hits to disappear.
    • Balloons go down in one hit, but fly up one row after each move, until they reach the top and leave the screen entirely. If you need more balloons to hit than what's left in the screen, you need to wait until new ones fly up from the bottom. To fly up, they push down whatever block there is in their way, which means that you can have power-ups lost forever if they're on the bottom row.
  • Heartwarming Moments:
    • While they lightly tease RM for his destructive skills, the members never blame him for breaking the wheel of the ship. When RM expresses that he's still feeling bad about it on Day 2, Jimin is quick to reassure him.
    • The members are quick to organize and help with tasks. A common sentiment among the members is that, as long as they're together, it will be okay.
    • The end of Day 3 has Jungkook wishing to see shooting stars. j-hope reveals that he brought fireworks so that, if there were no stars, they would at least have that experience.
  • Most Wonderful Sound: One half of what makes combos immensely satisfying.
    • When the BTS Bomb activates, the BTS member present will pop on the screen and give a cute shout. Might avert this trope if you didn't want the BTS Bomb to activate, though.
  • Scrappy Mechanic: Finishing a level will automatically send you back to the island instead of sending you to the next level. Manually going to the next level wouldn't be that bad if there wasn't a loading screen whenever you go from the island to a level (and viceversa), leading to Loads and Loads of Loading. Can be especially annoying if you've activated a booster with a time limit. Thankfully the Chapter 2 update now has the option of having the player either go back to the island or continue onto the next level.
  • Spiritual Adaptation: The story is similar to that of The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening in which a flying whale takes those stranded at sea to a beautiful island where they learn to make use of the time in paradise, not to mention that there's something strange in regards to the island itself. Main difference is that Koholint island is really the dream of the Windfish whereas it's unknown how the island and the flying whale in this game are connected.
  • Sweet Dreams Fuel: The game is intended to be relaxing and comforting, and it shows. From the cute aesthetics to the breezy main theme, everything makes for a pleasant atmosphere.
  • Win Back the Crowd: For BTS mobile games. The reactions to BTS World and BTS Universe Story ranged from "nice but So Okay, It's Average gameplay and/or story" at best (though with much better reactions to the art and music), to uninterested, to alienated by their premises at worst, which led some to question HYBE's understanding of the fanbase. While BTS Island isn't necessarily breaking new ground in the realm of gaming, the simple but effective concept and BTS' creative involvement resulted in a pleasant experience that appeals much better to fans than the game's predecessors.
