YMMV / BROCKHAMPTON

Go To

  • Ensemble Dark Horse: All of the prominent band members, and even members that reside more behind-the-scenes, have sizable fandoms. Strong cases for the best member in the whole band have been made for several different people, but the general consensus seems to state that Dom is semi-objectively the strongest member.
  • Friendly Fandoms:
    • Most notably with OFWGKTA, as many of the band members have cited OF members as influences, and especially since Kevin was featured on a bootleg Odd Future tape pre-BROCKHAMPTON.
    • There's also a lot of friendliness & even crossover with fans of BTS, seeing as both groups have expressed admiration of each other and have similarities as underdog hip-hop boy bands shooting up like rockets into the mainstream with deep, personal lyrics. BROCKHAMPTON's manager is also a huge fan of Jimin, and both groups have shouted out to each other before. As a result, many BTS fans are also fans of BROCKHAMPTON, and anyone who isn't still respects them.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: A lot of Ameer's verses concerning his own self-doubts (ex: "MILK") as well as some that have been perceived as demeaning towards women (ex: parts of his verses on "HEAT" and "STAR") became a lot harder to listen to in light of his sexual misconduct allegations, which led to him being removed entirely from the group. His verse on "MILK" is an especially heavy listen, as it ends with him essentially predicting his own fate.
And there's a couple women, and they know some things
About lies that I done told and shit that I done said
And niggas that I robbed, so I'm real paranoid
I have voices in my head
  • I Knew It!:
    • Many who refused to accept the fact that the band would actually be breaking up after the conclusion of the SATURATION trilogy were relieved when news broke of an upcoming 2018 album alongside Kevin explicitly tweeting that the band would stay together.
    • Considering some of the band members outright advised fans to pay attention to the final track of SATURATION III before the album released, many correctly guessed that it would segue into "HEAT", the opening track of the first SATURATION.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • Merlyn, what with his Pokémon Speak catchphrase and his boisterous persona, became especially ripe for memes among fans.
    • "Head was clean, Tony Fantano!"
    • On a similar note, Anthony Fantano is often jokingly considered a member of the band by fans.
    • "This is a gays only event, go home!"
  • Moment of Awesome:
    • How many fans reacted after the band was interviewed by Nardwuar the Human Serviette.
    • Jazze Pha — yes, the Jazze Pha — doing his classic "ladies and gentlemen" introduction on "1999 WILDFIRE".
  • Nightmare Fuel: The music video to "BUZZCUT" is incredibly trippy with the guys' faces occasionally warping very weirdly, but special mention goes out to the part where, Danny Brown, having been puked out by Joba, transforms into a horrifying gremlin-like creature.
  • Signature Song: "SUGAR", owing to it being their first mainstream hit single; other candidates include "STAR", "BLEACH", "BOOGIE" and "SWEET".
  • Song Association:
    • "BOOGIE" was used for a very brief scene in The Grinch (2018).
    • "ZIPPER" made the soundtrack of NBA 2K19.
    • "BUZZCUT" appears in FIFA 22, but only in the Volta street/futsal mode.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • bearface's songs often evoke this, especially "SUNNY" and "SWIM", which convey a sense of nostalgia that might bring a tear to one's eye (not even mentioning bearface's gorgeous falsetto melody at the end of the former), as well as "SUMMER", which references the Summer LaBeouf character (who killed himself) from Kevin's album American Boyfriend.
    • "BLEACH" is considered one of their more emotional songs, both lyrically and sonically. Live performances of the song have also been known to be emotional, but likely none more than the performance at Boston Calling as part of their Stereo Spirit tour (see more below). JOBA couldn't even get through his part without breaking down in tears, with Dom comforting him.
    • The Ameer situation. The ins and outs remain a hot-button issue, but regardless, the prospect of the legacy of such a loving and chemistry-filled group taking such a blow was and is disheartening, let alone what may have become of the group if none of it had ever happened.
      • The situation growing in seriousness and depth occurred around the same time as their Stereo Spirit tour. At one point, Ameer became absent from the tour's dates, and in the place of his verses, the band would stay somberly silent (perhaps throwing in an ad-lib if they did so on the original song). In the case of their performance at Boston Calling, Ameer was apparently barred from performing five minutes before they took the stage.
      • What worsened the initial allegations was the fact that they came out while the entirety of the band had deactivated all their social media accounts as part of the rollout for the since-shelved PUPPY. Ameer reactivated his Twitter to make a statement, but everyone else stayed publicly offline. Kevin later admitted in an Instagram livestream that he deeply regretted not saying anything.
      • The official statement announcing Ameer's removal, which started with six simple yet crushing words: "Ameer is no longer in BROCKHAMPTON." Some saw it as necessary justice or a necessary PR move, but it still showcased that the band's dynamic would no longer be the same.
      • "TONYA", which mostly touches upon the group's feelings in light of Ameer's removal. It also features a strong contender for Merlyn's single most heartfelt verse, as well as his most serious.
      • "DEARLY DEPARTED" puts further focus on this topic, especially with Dom's closing verse. The verse alludes to personal details of betrayal on Ameer's part that still anger Dom to such an extent that it ends with a real, unscripted breakdown, with Dom breaking Romil's headphones and storming out of the recording studio, all of which is heard in the song. It's also made much more uncomfortable given that Dom was the most vocal in the group about his opinions on Ameer, as stated in now-deleted tweets denouncing him and his attempts at garnering forgiveness.
