- Adaptation Displacement: The Nintendo Entertainment System version is better-known outside of Japan than the arcade original, despite (or more likely because of) it being a Porting Disaster.
- Best Known for the Fanservice: Let's be honest, if any of us caught wind of this, it's less likely because it's considered an underrated classic, and more likely because it stars a chick in a bikini.
- Fan Nickname: She's known by fans as "Goddess" (instead of "Princess") Athena because of her appearances in SNK Playmore crossovers (SVC: Chaos and NGBC) and to difference her from Athena Asamiya.
- Moe: The original game's artwork, along with the Super-Deformed sprites, make Athena a sort of prototype for moe sensibilities before they became omnipresent around the Turn of the Millennium. Athena: Full Throttle maintained this kind of style, updated for mid-2000s tastes.
- More Popular Spin-Off: Psycho Soldier, thanks to Athena Asamiya's continued popularity in The King of Fighters, is generally much more relevant to gamers than the original Athena that inspired it.
- Porting Disaster: The Nintendo Entertainment System version. Ported by the same guys behind the NES versions of the first two Ikari Warriors games, this took what was seen as a passable arcade game and turned it into one of the most reviled NES games around. Unfortunately, this is probably the most well-known version as well, due to the original arcade release being fairly limited and not receiving any international ports until much later on.
- Quirky Work: Athena, the goddess of wisdom, stripping down to her red underwear to go fight monsters and later having adventures at a Wizarding School. And then her descendant is a psychic Japanese schoolgirl.
- So Okay, It's Average: The original arcade version is seen as a competent but fairly forgettable platformer with nothing really special about it beyond the obvious.
- WTH, Costuming Department?: Athena's most iconic outfit is a red bikini and little else. It's pretty shameless about the whole ordeal, and might be the best thing she's known for today anyway.
