• The Woobie: Ash and Delia Ketchum. Fifteen years prior to the start of the story, Ash was attacked by the Team Rocket trio and suffered irreversible brain damage that has permanently left him mentally regressed to the emotional maturity of a five-year-old, and if Delia doesn't eventually have him institutionalized she's probably going to have to care for him for the rest of her life and then have him institutionalized in her will anyway. It's shown that being forced to care for her mentally disabled son has taken its toll on her, what with her prematurely going gray and looking horribly embarrassed at her grown-up child throwing a temper tantrum in public.
