  • Unintentional Period Piece: Astérix and Obélix's stint in the Roman Army contains a lot of references to the French military service (conscription), which was mandatory at the time this book was written, meaning that nearly all French men above 18 went through it. Since the military service became voluntary in the late 1990s, this means that most of the French people who were younger than 18 in 2000 will have no experience of it. As such, the jokes about the new recruits' life in the Army, while still funny in themselves, will not have the same impact on the civilian audience as they would have on people who went though the mandatory military service.
