YMMV / Anvil of Dawn

Go To

  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • Thanks to Kikoskia, a lot of people love the Black Gnarl for his jovial personality and especially the song he sings when crafting something for the player.
    • Daganoth is the most liked of the heroes due to being the only good Mirelurk around, and a smart one at that.
  • Nightmare Fuel: The monsters created by the Dark Slag's corruption make necromorphs look tame. The sounds they make, whether the noise of disjointed flesh dragging along the ground or the wails of several souls bound together by Flesh and Void magics, are even worse. Some "highlights" include the Quivering Pools, who used to be a whole group of people, the eldritch Eater Of Souls, which is covered in tortured faces, and the utterly grotesque Aracinfant.
  • Nightmare Retardant:
    • The standard "hit" noise is a cartoonish "punch" Stock Sound Effect that is impossible to take seriously. Even if what you've been whacked by is an enormous frog's clawed parasites, a sound that'd be right at home in a Superfriends fight scene makes it hilarious.
    • The Braid Stone enemy looks like a gigantic clawed arm made of rock and dirt. It attacks by... apparently yelling in the Player Character's face. It sounding like more like a grouchy old man rather than a wicked elemental does not help.
    • The Murk Elemental, an enemy in the Quagmire, takes the form of the top half of an attractive woman and its attacks sound like you're taking a Pie in the Face. Though the lack of mouth is kinda creepy, it's still not the most intimidating visage out there, for sure, especially compared to the horrific things you've encountered before like the Aracinfants, Quivering Pools, and Devourers of Souls.
  • So Okay, It's Average: The game has good mechanics, solid world building, and an extremely pleasing art-style that all sadly gets bogged down by a huge amount of repetition and confusing dungeon designs.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: The Warlord is made out to be this incredibly powerful and devious tyrant whom almost everyone is afraid of... and you never fight him, all you do is talk with him and then destroy his power via throwing a MacGuffin into the Anvil of Dawn. We don't even find out what happens to the Warlord after you beat him. Ironically, the Castellan ends up being more of a final boss despite appearing one dungeon earlier.
