  • Complete Monster: Haunted is a monstrous psychopath obsessed with spreading despair to all around him, and serves as the Arch-Enemy of numerous characters due to his evil. Introduced butchering and sacrificing over 50 people to summon a demon and have it slaughter innocents, Haunted later invades one of the Inquisition's schools and murders his way through dozens of trainee students. In his quest to cause despair to everyone he sees fit, Haunted murders one of his partners in the arms of her sister, reunites a lost girl with her mother only to decapitate the girl while her mother watches, and forces Mari to serve him by using numerous orphans as hostages, then revealing he killed the children long ago. In his grandest scheme of despair yet, primarily targeting his self-proclaimed greatest foe Takeru, Haunted turns the boy's sister into a killing machine, knowing Takeru will either have to kill her or watch her slaughter humanity, and occupies his time by wiping out an entire town of innocents. In the end, Haunted is beaten after revealing he has killed close to 13,000 people over the years, and uses his final moments in an attempt to kill Takeru to snuff out the "beacon of hope" that the world sees him as. A truly depraved lunatic who horrified and repulsed even his own organization and partners—many whom he kills at the drop of a hat—Haunted stands out even in this dark world as a twisted individual.
  • Fan Nickname: A couple here and there
    • Mari is sometimes called Fuel Tank by fans, or occasionally Boobless Fuel Tank thanks to one of the author afterwords.
    • Usagi is commonly referred to as Useless Bunny because of Ikaruga's teasing.
  • Magnificent Bastard: Sougetsu Ootori is the hammy, silly Chairman of the Inquisition, using his seemingly harmless personality and position on the side of good to hide the fact that he is a god seeking the destruction of the planet. Fooling enemies and allies alike with his fake persona, Sougetsu simultaneously serves as the Principal of the Anti-Magic Academy, building it from scratch and training hundreds of youngsters with potential in a variety of skills. Sougetsu manipulates his students to carry out a bevy of plans for him unbeknownst to them, and plays members of Valhalla and the Alchemists alike to his tune, ultimately planning to force Takeru to strike him dead and doom the planet to annihilation thanks to Sougetsu's connection to the life force of the world. Driven by an engineered desire to destroy all things—himself included—Sougetsu nonetheless respects his foes and has a roaring good time carrying out his plans, chuckling even when beaten that he regrets nothing and is pleased with how he lived his life.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: A lot, mainly coming from readers of the original novels.
    • The anime glosses over a lot of backstory and characterization from the books in favor of adding additional fanservice, turning many characters more one-dimensional than the books intended them to be.
    • Several characters are Demoted to Extra:
      • Lapis, who in the books arguably converses with Takeru the most, is reduced almost to the status of Living Prop in some episodes, going entire halves or even full episodes without speaking.
      • Kiseki is a huge part of Takeru's backstory and is frequently mentioned in the novels. In the anime, apart from a throwaway line in the first episode, it took her till the tenth episode to even put in an appearance.
      • Kyoya. In the novels he's The Rival, but in the anime he's only had one cameo with one spoken line.
