YMMV / Ancient Roman: Power of Dark Side

Go To

  • Fake Longevity: For an RPG that's already only about 20 hours, the second disc mostly revolves around fetch quest to obtain each character's Ultimate Weapon. However, the dungeons are mostly bland, and little character development takes place during this time, despite each of the dungeons revolving around a respective character. Even disregarding a dry second act, if there weren't so many random encounters in small dungeon rooms, the game would probably be beaten in several less hours.
  • Game-Breaker: The sleep spell is very broken in this game. It has a decent hit rate, and it's effective against all enemies, even the final boss. Also, using the sleep spell resets its status if it hits. To make this even more broken, Burke can equip an axe that always causes the enemy it hits to fall asleep. Due to this effect, some players find it more useful than his Ultimate Weapon. This axe is also found around the middle of Disc 1.
  • Good Bad Bugs: The game's music wasn't supposed to be anywhere near as dissonant as it actually is — it only sounds like that because certain instruments were transposed to the wrong key when the MIDI sequences were adapted to the PlayStation's sound chip! For just one example, compare the version of the Sanatori Village theme from the game's official soundtrack CD (or, as it's inexplicably called there, "Mermaid Village") to the version actually used in-game.
  • So Bad, It's Good: This is an otherwise generic fantasy turn-based RPG, especially once the PS1 was in its fourth year, but what really makes it take the cake is its abysmal production values. The models have very low detail, the battle backgrounds have almost no effort, the animation looks like it was made by an amateur in Blender, the pre-rendered backgrounds appear to have poor detail and unreasonable geometry beyond it being a fantasy game, the voice acting is poor, the music is on quality with bad MIDIs. Oh, and the title seems to not have anything to do with the setting, plot, and characters.
  • They Copied It, So It Sucks!: Some people view this game as a failed attempt to recapture the success of Final Fantasy VII, particularly with its pre-rendered worlds with full 3D characters and battles. This was also released roughly a year after Final Fantasy VII.
